THE HIKE EXPERIENCE
The trail begins at Skjeggedal parking and immediately climbs through boulder fields and rocky terrain. You'll traverse high mountain plateaus with expansive views across fjords and valleys. Weather changes rapidly at altitude—fog, wind, rain, and even summer snow are common. The final approach involves exposed ridge sections before reaching the famous rock ledge. Standing on Trolltunga, looking straight down 700 meters with nothing but air between you and the water below, creates an unforgettable sense of exposure and achievement.
PREPARATION
Proper preparation is essential: sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, multiple clothing layers, substantial food and water (2-3 liters minimum), and trekking poles. Start early (6-7 AM) to avoid crowds and afternoon weather deterioration. The hike is only recommended mid-June through mid-September when trails are snow-free. Many find the descent particularly challenging as fatigue sets in.
For less experienced hikers, guided Trolltunga expeditions provide safety equipment, experienced guides, and transportation. If you're seeking similar dramatic cliff experiences, Kjeragbolten in the Lysefjord region.
