Acerca de esta aventura

Hidden path up Lofoten's most iconic peak—an old fishing trail with incredible views over Reine village, often called the most beautiful village in Norway. This challenging ascent has been transformed by an impressive stone staircase of over 1,500 steps, completed in 2019, making the steep 450-meter climb more accessible while maintaining its wild character.

Before the stairs, this was a steep erosion scar that became increasingly dangerous. The Sherpa-built stone stairway is an engineering marvel, each step carefully placed to minimize environmental impact while providing safer access. The stairs don't make it easy—they make it possible.

The Climb

Start from the E10 highway near Reine (67.9280°N, 13.0837°E) and prepare for an intense workout. The parking area is well-marked, with information boards showing the route profile—a relentlessly steep 450-meter ascent over just 1.5 kilometers horizontal distance. The average gradient is 30%, with some sections exceeding 40%.

The first section climbs relentlessly through dwarf birch forest, with steps rising in tight switchbacks. Your calves and thighs will burn immediately—this is one of the steepest maintained trails in Norway. Take breaks at the small platforms built into the stairs every 50-100 meters. These rest spots offer increasingly impressive views back down to the fjord.

After about 30 minutes of climbing, you emerge from vegetation onto exposed mountainside with increasingly spectacular views. Each turn of the switchback reveals more of Reine's perfect postcard setting below—red fishermen's cabins (rorbuer) dotting the shoreline, mountains rising from turquoise waters, and the geometric patterns of the village layout becoming clearer.

The final 200 meters leave the stairs behind, following a rocky path to the summit. This section requires careful foot placement on loose stones, but the worst of the steep climbing is behind you. The anticipation builds as you approach the top.

The Summit Vista

The summit vista is considered one of Scandinavia's finest, offering 360-degree views across the Lofoten archipelago. Reine spreads below like a miniature village, its red and white buildings arranged along narrow strips of land between mountain and sea. The E10 highway snakes through the landscape, bridging between islands.

To the south, Reinefjorden stretches toward the open ocean, its waters changing color from deep blue to turquoise depending on depth and light. To the north, the jagged peaks of Lofoten march into the distance, each summit sharp and dramatic. On clear days, you can see dozens of kilometers in every direction.

Visit during midnight sun season (May-July) for golden hour light lasting all night, perfect for photography. Photographers flock here for sunset, which around midsummer occurs near midnight, bathing the landscape in warm orange and pink tones that last for hours. The light at 2am can be just as magical as 10pm.

The summit has several viewpoints. Don't crowd near edges—the rock is steep and loose in places. Give yourself time to explore the whole summit area and find your favorite perspective. Many visitors spend 30-60 minutes at the top, soaking in the views and recovering from the climb.

Practical Information

Start early morning (6-8am) or late evening (8pm-midnight in summer) to avoid crowds, as this trail has become increasingly popular—up to 1000 people daily in peak summer. Midday, especially in July and August, can mean queues on the stairs and crowded summit. Early morning also offers better light for photography and calmer winds.

Weather can change rapidly—bring windproof clothing even on calm days below. The summit is fully exposed, and wind can be fierce even when conditions at the base are pleasant. Pack warm layers; it's typically 5-10°C colder at the top than at sea level.

The descent is hard on knees and requires concentration, as the steep stairs can be treacherous. Trekking poles are highly recommended and will save your knees. Many people find the descent harder than the ascent. Take your time, use the railings where provided, and watch your footing—loose gravel on the steps is slippery.

Water is available only at the parking area—bring at least 1 liter per person. In hot weather, bring more. No facilities exist on the mountain. The entire hike typically takes 3-4 hours including summit time, but fit hikers can do it in 2.5 hours.

Parking is limited and fills by 9am in summer. Consider parking in Reine village and walking the kilometer to the trailhead. Overflow parking areas exist along the E10. Respect private property and don't block access roads.
